Rainbow Moonstone has a unique, translucent white hue akin to "moonshine" which rolls and flows over the stone when moved. It is caused by the diffraction of light in its layers of feldspar. Its transparency varies from opaque to semitranslucent, and it usually has a creamy hue, occasionally with iridescent and multicolored flashes (especially blue). Natural light provides the best backdrop to view the play of color. Moonstone has been in jewelry since ancient civilizations; the Greeks and Romans even believed it was made from moon rays! During the Art Nouveau period, it was a favorite among artists and goldsmiths for making jewelry.
