Labradorite was found in Canada's Labrador province and was named after it. The Inuits called it a "fire stone" and used powdered forms to treat medical issues. Legend has it that a warrior freed some of the Northern Lights from within the stones by striking them with a spear. Moravian missionaries described the stone in the late 18th century, leading to its widespread popularity in European markets. Labradorite can be found in various parts of the world, such as Mexico, Russia and Finland. Highly sought after for jewelry, it is also used to make glass, in asphalt paving and in pottery production.
