The Legend of Crazy Woman
Why the name Crazy Woman? There are several tales that attempt to unravel the mysterious "Legend of Crazy Woman". The first claims a trader's wife witnessed her spouse and children killed by a tribe of Native Americans when there was no longer any whiskey to barter. This resulting horror made her go insane, causing her to wander a creek and canyon district in Wyoming, sorrowfully wailing in agony.
The next tells the story of a pioneer family traveling by covered wagon are attacked by Native American warriors. The three children and father are all brutally murdered. After witnessing such horror, the surviving woman went crazy, grabbed and ax and turned on the warriors, killing four of them as they fled the bloody scene. Refusing to leave her family, a man named Johnson came along and buried her family members. He built a small cabin for her. Unfortunately, years later, he found her frozen body, dead from starvation.
Another story vaguely similar, yet different, contends a Native American woman escaped with her life after an attack on her people in the same area, losing her mind from the traumatic attack. According to Mae Urbanek's "Wyoming Place Names", locals reported sighting the "Crazy Woman" wailing and hollering as she roamed the canyon and creek beds on moonlit nights. It is said your can still hear her mournful screams today.
